The History behind of the Prayer for Serenity

The history of this prayer is quite interesting. Even though it is contributed to Reinhold Niebuhr, the origin can be traced back to Epictetus an ancient Greek sage who wrote about accepting our fates and we are responsible for our own actions. It is said that the prayer started out as a parable and was handed down by word of mouth. There is no way to really trace how far back it goes, but we can see the impact it has made.

Believe it or not the text to this prayer has been set to music. It also is on the back cover of several albums including the album covers of Sinead O'Connor and Neil Young. It is included in lyrics and referenced in biographies. Most notably AA adopted a modified form in 1941 and handed copies out to its members.
